S N SrinivasS N Srinivas
Fellow and Area Convenor of Rural and Renewable Energy Area
TERI

Mr. Srinivas has Bachelor’s degree (Mech. Engg.) from the Karnataka Regional Engineering College, Surathkal.  He is currently Fellow and Area Convenor of Rural and Renewable Energy Area at TERI. He leads a group of about ten multidisciplinary professionals at TERI currently. He has total experience of 15 years in the field of Energy. He has worked as Lecturer at BIET, Davangere and worked in Combustion, Gasification & Propulsion Laboratory of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore before joining TERI.

Key assignments completed

  • Involved in re-designing gasifier based power systems (managed the gasifier based power generating systems for village electrification in Karnataka for three years, 5,000 hours of operation in un-electrified village by State grid).
  • He was involved in packaging gasifier based systems for several thermal applications, Silk, puffed rice, hot water generation, cooking, lead melting, etc. (Gasifier for cocoon cooking has been patented). He was instrumental in devising methods to sustain operation of gasifier based systems for thermal applications. The gasifier systems in silk dyeing have logged 130,000 hours in the last five years.
  • Was involved in identifying and nurturing entrepreneurs in the promotion of renewable energy devices. M/s Vijay Engineering Enterprises, Bangalore, S A Renewable Energy Chikmagalore, etc. He has conceptualized the ESCO (Energy Service Company) concept for the gasifier systems which is functional at Bangalore for a community cooking arrangement.
  • Member of evaluation team on the theme of Renewable Energy Technology for the Goenka Award during year 1994
  • Was involved in preparing energy plans at Cluster village level, Taluka level and district level (in Karnataka & Rajasthan)
  • Involved in developing low cost heat recovery packages for silk yarn drying, preheating of water for puffed rice, and domestic systems
  • He has Co-guided students to pursue their work for M.Tech (2 nos.), and M.B.A. (4 nos., 2 of them currently ongoing from Germany)
  • Has been visiting faculty to Himachal Pradesh Administrative Training Institute, Shimla and also trainer on energy issues at several places.

Major ongoing assignments
A list of major ongoing assignments in which he is leading/major contribution is given below;

  • Advisory support to the Department of Rural Development & Panchayat Raj, Government of Karnataka on Rural Energy Programmes
  • Exchange of knowledge and know-how on solar technologies between Germany, Belgium and India
  • Collaborative work with Solar Institute Julich, Germany and Thames Water, London on Indianising the Solar Desalination unit
  • Development of range of low cost domestic cooking and hot water generation options, both efficient biomass and solar techniques
  • Development of range of techniques to upgrade the technologies in Puffed rice and other such enterprises
  • Preparation of Hand book on energy for Grama Panchayats
  • He is currently co-guiding two students from Germany on issues related to solar desalination

Publications - He has published 32 papers in national & international journals, workshops and conferences and edited a book titled “Biomass energy systems”.

Memberships  He is member of Advisory committee of Rural Energy Programmes of Department of Rural Development & Panchayat Raj, Government of Karnataka, member of Executive committee and Academic Council of MGRIRED (Mahatma Gandhi Regional Institute for Rural Energy & Development), member of BUN (Biomass Users Network), member of Solution Exchange -Knowledge Forum, United Nations Development Programme, and SERI- Forum.

Awards - He is the recipient of first prize for presenting a paper given by Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources during the year 1993. He is also one of the team member involved in the development of gasifier based cocoon cooking system that was awarded “Energy Globe 2001- The world Award for Sustainable Energy, Best 50” instituted by Government of Austria.

International experience - He has international exposure in collaborative projects with University of Waterloo, Canada; Solar Institute Julich, Germany (current). He has traveled to about thirteen countries on mission visits, exchange programmes, etc. He has undergone trainings at University of Waterloo on systems Engineering, and Energy Management in Small Industries in University of Twente & Maastricht School of Management, Netherlands.
