Obtained B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT – Chennai. Master of Business Law from National Law School of India University, Bangalore.

Joined IPS in 1973 after a brief stint in Central Public Works Department New Delhi and Orissa. Served in various capacities in Uttar Pradesh and in the Intelligence, Fire Services and Vigilance departments.  Worked as Superintendent of Police, Bangalore and Bellary Districts,  as SP/CBI Bangalore, DIG/CBI New Delhi and DIG/CBI Madras. Handled several important cases including recovery of Sword of Tipu Sultan, Harshad Mehta Bank Scam, and Shri Rajiv Gandhi Assassination case as member of the Special Investigation Team at Chennai.

In the rank of IGP served as Commissioner for Traffic & Road Safety and  Corps of Detectives. Worked as Director (Security & Vigilance) in KSRTC and was an important member of the team responsible for restructuring KSRTC. Worked as the Chairman & Managing Director of KSPHC and brought about several transformation Initiatives including e-tendering, web based Project Management System, e-commerce and e-billing etc.

Decorated with the Indian Police Medal for meritorious service on the occasion of Republic Day 1989 and President's Police Medal for distinguished services on the occasion of Independence Day 1995.
